A tailings storage facility or a heap leach pad rarely gets the same attention as a processing plant or fleet of haul trucks, right up until something goes wrong. When a liner underperforms, the consequences can include seepage, groundwater contamination, and regulatory breach notices. In the worst cases, failures involving the broader design, construction, operation, or monitoring of a tailings facility can have catastrophic consequences. These risks make containment one of the least visible and most consequential engineering decisions at a mine site.
Agru Australia has spent more than three decades supplying the plastic pipe and geomembrane systems that support these containment applications.
From distributor to national supplier of a global system
Agru Australia began operations in 1990 as a distributor of plastic piping and lining technology of AGRU Kunststofftechnik — Agru Australia’s parent manufacturing company in Austria — into the Australian market. Over more than 30 years, the relationship has expanded to include national distribution and technical support, with locations in Lawnton, Queensland; Kwinana Beach, Western Australia; and Sunshine West, Victoria, providing access to stock and after-sales services.
The global AGRU business describes itself as the leading manufacturer of structured and embossed geomembranes, using a patented flat die-cast extrusion process to produce high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) liners. For Australian mining clients, the company says the scale of its manufacturing operations supports consistency across liner rolls produced closely controlled processes.
Purpose-built liners for different failure modes
Not every containment application faces the same risk, and Agru’s mining-specific liner range reflects that. The MikroSpike® High Grip geomembrane, with more than 20,000 spikes per square metre, is designed for applications that require increased interface friction on steep slopes while containing aggressive or concentrated media. A smoother liner may be adequate for a low-slope evaporation pond but can provide less interface friction on a steep containment wall, depending on the design and surrounding materials. This is the kind of application-specific consideration that a generic liner specification can miss.
For heap leaching operations extracting gold, copper, nickel or uranium, ore is stacked on sealing sheets and irrigated with a leaching solution — often a dilute sodium cyanide solution in gold recovery. Agru supplies high-density polyethylene (PE-HD) lining systems intended to provide long-term groundwater protection beneath leach pads. Given that the leaching solution is deliberately designed to mobilise metals from rock, the liner beneath that process is one of the operation’s most environmentally critical component.
Piping that matches the media, not just the flow rate
Agru’s mining product range extends well beyond liners to the piping systems that move mine water and tailings around a site. The MINELINE piping system is designed specifically for abrasive media such as tailings slurry, sand, and kaolin-water mixtures. It uses a multilayer pipe with an abrasion-resistant inner layer designed to extend service life compared with conventional piping in high-wear applications.
Its white outer layer reflects sunlight, helping to limit heat absorption and thermal expansion when the pipe is exposed to direct sunlight. AGRU says this design can also support operating reliability by reducing temperature-related stress on the piping system.
For water management, AGRU manufactures crack-resistant PE 100-RC pressure pipes outside diameters of up to 3,500mm. The pipes that can be used to transport groundwater and mine water from open-cut or underground operations to treatment plants and evaporation ponds.
Where potentially explosive gases or dusts are present — a genuine risk across mining, chemical processing, and several adjacent sectors — AGRU electrically conductive and flame-retardant piping materials, including PE-HD-el and PPs-el. These materials with flame-retarding characteristics, often specified as a lower-cost alternative to stainless steel for transporting flammable media.
Why manufacturer-backed support matters on site
A recurring theme across Agru’s mining product literature is the importance of welding and installation discipline rather than the material alone. The company also supplies the welding machines and equipment for installing plastic piping systems, allowing material specifications and installation methodology under one technical relationship rather than splitting responsibility between a liner supplier and a separate installation contractor.
For mine operators assessing containment and piping risk across tailings facilities, heap leach pads, and mine water infrastructure, Agru Australia’s offering combines AGRU’s global manufacturing capabilities, Australian distribution, and application-specific product engineering. The company positions this approach as a way to match barrier and piping systems to the actual chemistry and mechanical demands they will face, not just selecting them solely against the initial budget.
