Global mining services provider Thiess has secured two five-year contracts to deliver underground mining and asset management services in Mongolia.
At the Oyu Tolgoi Mine, Thiess will deliver underground mining services via the Thiess-Khishig Arvin Joint Venture (TKAJV) to support the ongoing development of the Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO)-managed copper-gold operation. The scope covers underground development, ground support installation, and block cave infrastructure construction.
The award is expected to create more than 110 roles over the coming months, with the workforce projected to expand to nearly 800 people by the end of the term. This establishes Oyu Tolgoi as the company’s largest underground mining operation globally.
Thiess has operated at Oyu Tolgoi through the JV since 2016.
Under the second agreement, Thiess will deliver coal handling and preparation plant asset management, supply chain management, technical support, and planning services for Energy Resources at the Ukhaa Khudag Mine.
CEO Michael Wright says these awards reflect the trust clients place in Thiess.
“These awards […] reflect the strength of our long-standing partnerships with Oyu Tolgoi and Energy Resources, as well as the capability of our team,” Wright says.
“Our success is built on our global expertise, our local people, and our local capability, and we’re proud these contracts will create new career opportunities as our workforce grows.”
Thiess is an international mining services provider delivering open-cut and underground mining, asset management, and operational solutions across global resource projects.
