Every underground mine in Australia has to answer an uncomfortable question during an emergency response drill: if a fire broke out right now and cut off the primary escape route, would the refuge chamber actually work?
Not “is it installed.” Not “did it pass its last inspection two years ago.” Would it work, tonight, for the full duration a rescue might take.
That gap, between owning a chamber and being genuinely ready to use one, is where Wattrix operates. The Boronia-based company designs, manufactures, and supports mine refuge chambers, and its argument is a simple one: a refuge chamber is not a piece of equipment you buy once and forget. It is a system that has to stay ready for years, sometimes decades, without ever being tested by the emergency it exists for.
Why Refuge Chambers Are Held to a Different Standard
Refuge chambers exist because underground emergencies, most commonly fires involving diesel plant or conveyor structures, can produce smoke and toxic gases faster than personnel can reach the surface. Western Australia’s Department of Mines guidelines, now widely treated as the benchmark across Australian jurisdictions, set a minimum standalone duration of 36 hours. That figure isn’t arbitrary. It accounts for worst-case scenarios such as a large rubber-tyred vehicle fire, where the risk of re-ignition or tyre explosion can persist for up to 24 hours before rescue teams can safely approach.
Inside that 36-hour window, a chamber has to maintain oxygen levels between 19.5 and 22 percent, scrub carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide from the air continuously, and keep the internal environment sealed against smoke and contaminants from outside. Every one of those functions depends on components, seals, scrubber media, batteries, and monitoring systems, that degrade over time whether the chamber is ever occupied or not.
This is the part of the industry that gets less attention than the initial purchase decision. A chamber that was compliant on delivery day can quietly fall out of compliance years later if servicing lapses, consumables aren’t rotated, or the site loses institutional knowledge of who’s responsible for what.
Wattrix’s Approach: Manufacturing With the Whole Lifecycle in View
Wattrix has been designing and building refuge chambers in Victoria since 2010, moving through larger premises in Lilydale, Kilsyth, and now Bayswater as manufacturing demand grew. Each chamber takes around twelve weeks to complete, from the steel shell through to the full interior fit-out, and the company’s chambers carry Australian Made certification, a detail that matters in an industry where supply chain resilience and local parts availability directly affect how quickly a chamber can be serviced or repaired.
What distinguishes Wattrix from a straightforward equipment supplier is the emphasis on what happens after delivery. The company positions itself around full lifecycle support: supply of new chambers, restoration of existing units that have fallen behind on condition, ongoing consumables and spares, and servicing that keeps a chamber compliant rather than merely installed. Wattrix also services chambers across multiple brands, not just its own, recognising that most sites inherit a mix of equipment over time and need a single accountable party rather than a fragmented set of vendor relationships.
The company’s 2023 introduction of an automated emergency air purification system reflects the same underlying philosophy. Rather than relying solely on manual monitoring, the system uses sensors to detect contaminant levels and adjusts filtration automatically, reducing the margin for human error at precisely the moment when error is least tolerable.
Readiness as a Discipline, Not a Purchase Order
The uncomfortable truth about refuge chambers is that they are almost always tested at the worst possible moment, under conditions nobody planned for on a normal working day. A chamber that hasn’t been serviced on schedule, that’s missing current consumables, or whose seals have degraded, doesn’t announce that failure until someone is standing inside it during an actual emergency.
Wattrix’s position is that this risk sits with the supplier as much as the site. Manufacturing a compliant chamber is only the first half of the job. Structure, discipline, and accountability across the chamber’s operating life, servicing intervals kept, spares available when needed, restoration offered before a unit becomes unsafe rather than after, are what actually determine whether the 36-hour promise on the compliance certificate holds up when it matters.
For mine operators, that reframes the refuge chamber decision. It isn’t really a question of which unit to buy. It’s a question of which supplier will still be answering the phone, and still have the right parts on the shelf, a decade after the chamber was installed.
