Most equipment failures on mine sites don’t happen without warning. The warning is just invisible to the naked eye.
A hairline crack in a pressure vessel weld. A subsurface defect in a structural component that’s been cycling under load for a decade. Corrosion working its way through a pipe wall from the inside out. None of these are visible during a routine walk-around inspection. What ATTAR Actually Does
The full name is Advanced Technology Testing and Research, and the company has expanded well beyond its origins in materials testing and NDT training. Today their capabilities span failure analysis and forensic engineering, asset condition monitoring, compliance testing, risk assessment, expert witness services, and training programs that qualify engineers and technicians to carry out NDT work to international standards.
For mining operations, the most directly relevant services sit across a few key areas.
NDT itself covers a range of inspection techniques used to evaluate the integrity of equipment and structures without taking them offline or cutting into them. On a mine site, that means pressure vessels in processing plants, structural welds on conveyors and materials handling equipment, pipework carrying slurry or process chemicals, and the steel components of heavy vehicles and machinery. ATTAR is an Authorised Qualifying Body (AQB) to ISO 9712, which is the international standard for NDT personnel certification. ATTAR’s co-founder Gary Martin has 52 years of experience in materials failure analysis across metals, polymers, and ceramics, and has provided expert witness services to courts and tribunals. The WA Expansion
In March 2024, ATTAR formally opened a consolidated facility at Welshpool in Perth’s industrial belt, following the 2022 acquisition of Exceed Consulting. The decision to invest heavily in Western Australia was deliberate. As CEO Glenn D’Costa noted at the time, WA’s unique concentration of mining, oil and gas, and supporting industries makes it a critical market for the kind of services ATTAR provides.
Welshpool puts ATTAR squarely in the middle of the WA mining services ecosystem, close to the engineering and procurement hubs that service the Pilbara, the Goldfields, and the other producing regions. For mine sites needing rapid turnaround on NDT or materials testing, proximity matters.
Condition Monitoring: Moving Beyond Scheduled Maintenance
One of the more significant shifts in how mining operations manage equipment reliability over the past decade has been the move away from purely schedule-based maintenance toward condition-based approaches. Instead of replacing or inspecting components at fixed intervals regardless of actual condition, condition monitoring looks at what the equipment is telling you and acts on that.
ATTAR’s condition monitoring services are designed to feed into this model. By tracking how assets are actually degrading, rather than assuming degradation follows a predetermined curve, mine sites can extend the life of components that have more life in them and catch problems earlier in those that are deteriorating faster than expected.
