A contractor’s employee has died in an accident at West Wits Mining’s (ASX:WWI) Qala Shallows underground mine, located within the Witwatersrand Basin Project in South Africa.
The fatality has been formally notified to the South African Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR), as listed in regulatory protocols.
West Wits is engaging with the DMPR to support the formal investigation.
No further information regarding the cause or time of the accident has been shared as of yet.
West Wits says it would like to extend its “deepest and most sincere condolences to the contractor’s employee’s family, friends, and colleagues during this profoundly difficult time”.
The company suspects the incident will not cause a material impact on mining operations at Qala Shallows.
West Wits describes the safety and wellbeing of each individual at its mining operations as the company’s highest priority.
“West Wits maintains a zero-harm safety culture and is fully committed to continuously strengthening safety practices across all operations,” the company shared in a statement following the incident.
