Hong Kong has cemented itself as a key global centre for resource capital, highlighted by the strong showing at FCR Resources Day Hong Kong on 16 September 2026.
The showcase brought a strong lineup of ASX-listed companies to the city, with representatives presenting project updates and investment opportunities directly to Hong Kong-based capital players looking to engage with Australia’s emerging resource stories.
West Wits Mining (ASX:WWI) CEO Rudi Deysel presented at the event, highlighting the company’s position as South Africa’s newest gold producer, with the Qala Shallows Project ramping up towards a steady-state production rate of 70,000 ounces per annum.
Deysel says production is picking up, with the project now operating smoothly.
West Wits isn’t looking to undertake a capital raise at the moment, as it is fully funded for the time being. However, Deysel says the company has strong support from regional institutional investors and it is important to stay connected with them and share details on key developments.
The company is also looking to attract other potential shareholders who would buy on market, with the aim of bringing more institutional investors into the register.
Deysel notes that China and the Asia Pacific region’s longstanding ties with the African market mean local investors are generally more inclined to get involved in African projects.
The conference attracted over 70 investors from Hong Kong, mainland China, and across Asia, including many with extensive experience investing in ASX-listed junior resource companies.
“The attendees’ strong interest and insightful questions reflected a clear focus on identifying undervalued opportunities with meaningful growth potential,” FCR Head of Investor Relations Robert Williams says.
“It was particularly encouraging to see investors undertaking rigorous due diligence and engaging directly with management teams to uncover genuine deep-value opportunities.
“The response from attendees reinforced our view that there is significant investor appetite for well-managed junior resource companies with compelling fundamentals, clear growth pathways, and long-term value potential, and reflected growing recognition of the quality of opportunities presented.”
Investing in the ASX junior sector
Warwick Grigor, chairman of Far East Capital, opened the event, sharing insights from his decades in the industry on evaluating and investing in the junior market.
Grigor cautions against taking press releases at face value, saying they are often a company’s highlight reel rather than the full story of what is happening in a drill hole or with assay results. While a healthy dose of scepticism is crucial, he warns against being too cynical, as this can close investors off to potential opportunities.
He outlines what he calls the Grigor Sentiment Oscillator, a tool he uses to understand commodity and market trends and remove personal bias in favour of data-driven market analysis. The oscillator tracks a cross-section of around 150 ASX-listed stocks, charting their prices daily and calculating trends, market sentiment, and likely inflection points.
While acknowledging the risks, Grigor notes the importance of strong, reliable, and honest management teams. He says that while top-level management cannot give any guarantees, good management can improve a company’s chances of success.
The strong turnout of over 70 seasoned investors at FCR Resources Day Hong Kong underscores the city’s growing influence as a gateway for resource capital. With Asia-Pacific investors showing deep engagement and a clear appetite for undervalued ASX juniors, Hong Kong is positioning itself as an investment hub where global capital meets resource opportunities.
