IN LONDON: The European Commission and Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology have signed a letter of intent to strengthen cooperation in science, technology, and innovation.
As part of the agreement, the EU and Vietnam are expected to deepen collaboration between researchers, universities, start-ups, industry, and public institutions.
Vietnam is already actively engaged in Horizon Europe, with researchers and organisations contributing to collaborative projects in areas including digital technologies, health, and green innovation.
European Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva says Vietnam’s scientific and engineering talent complements the EU’s scientific excellence, innovation ecosystem, and research-to-market strengths.
“As we celebrate 35 years of EU-Vietnam relations, we look ahead to deepening strategic cooperation in AI, green technologies, and digital transformation,” Zaharieva says.
In 2020, the EU and Vietnam implemented a free trade agreement which has helped raise bilateral trade by around 40% and expanded EU investment in Vietnam from €22 billion ($35.7 billion) to more than €30 billion.
Under the EU Global Gateway Strategy, EU-funded interventions support Vietnam in its pathway towards a low-carbon and climate-resilience economy for sustainable green growth. EU cooperation focuses on investments in the clean energy transition and decarbonisation of the transport sector.
