IN LONDON: Late last week, the Energy Union Task Force (EUTF) had a meeting, convened by the European Commission, to discuss energy security prices, amid evolving developments in the Middle East.
Regarding the security of the gas and oil supply situation in Europe, EUTF gathered in a new form – EUTF Security. The participants confirmed that there are no immediate risks on security of supply, in line with the conclusions of the 4 March Oil and Gas Coordination Group meetings. The direct impact on EU energy markets remains limited.
The task force also shared their views on the challenges of high energy prices and their impact on Europe’s industrial competitiveness. Participants provided insights into their national specificities.
Views were also exchanged surrounding the current mechanisms governing electricity markets, stressing the need to ensure investor uncertainty and predictability to accelerate the deployment of domestic, affordable and clean energy supplies.
The European energy market is considered the world’s largest integrated electricity system, serving 266 million customers through highly interconnected networks, according to the European Commission. The market is currently undergoing a rapid transition, with renewables generating 40.8% of electricity in 2023.
The EU internal energy market saves consumers €34 billion annually and with deeper integration, this could rise to €40-43 billion by 2030.
According to Eurostat, the share of electricity produced by renewable energy sources, predominantly solar and wind, is expected to grow from 37% in 2020 to more than 60% by 2030. In 2024, renewables made up 47.5% of the EU’s gross electricity consumption.
Announced in June 2025, EUTC is a key initiative under the Action Plan for Affordable Energy. The task force aims to deliver concrete results through enhanced coordination across the energy union, giving political impulse to addressing the challenges associated with shaping our collective energy system of the future. It entails addressing structural challenges as well as rapid political coordination and action on pressing needs.
