IperionX strikes first US Army task order

IperionX (ASX:IPX) has received the first task order, valued at US$1.3 million ($1.99 million), from the US Army under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) phase three contract with the US Department of Defense. 

Last week, the company was awarded the contract which establishes a funding mechanism through which qualifying US Government agencies can place project-specific task orders for the supply of IperionX titanium components and parts. 

The first task order, part of the US$99 million contract, facilitates the production and delivery of titanium parts for US Army ground vehicle programs. 

IperionX, which has a market capitalisation of $1.33 billion, says the task order will  be fulfilled at its Titanium Manufacturing Campus in Virginia, using proprietary titanium production and advanced forging processes. 

The company adds that manufacturing these titanium components in the US strengthens supply-chain resilience and reduces reliance on foreign titanium sources, while creating manufacturing jobs in the nation.

CEO Anastasios Arima says securing this first task order is a decisive step toward reshorting the nation’s titanium supply chain. 

“It marks the beginning of a long-term partnership with the Department of Defense that will deliver mission-critical titanium parts and strengthen America’s advanced-materials leadership,” Arima says. 

The SBIR program progresses innovations through three stages, with stage three being reserved for commercialisation activities. These activities allow federal agencies to procure proven SBIR-funded technologies without further competition. 

Titanium is considered popular to use across military and defence sectors, with the material offering benefits across the majority of vehicles and structures both areas use. 

Titanium is a lustrous, silver-grey metal highly resistant to corrosion, with low density but is both strong and lightweight. It is used in a variety of industries including power generation, utilities, automotive, and healthcare, due to its excellent strength-to-weight ratio and resistance to extreme temperatures and chemicals.

The titanium market has grown in recent years and is projected to grow from US$27.23 billion in 2024 to US$28.68 billion in 2025 at a compound annual growth rate of 5.3%. This growth is attributed to aerospace advancements, military and defence applications, industrial expansion, medical implants and devices, as well as sports equipment development.
