Impala Platinum Holdings (JSE:IMP) says it has temporarily suspended mining at the Rustenburg complex while it conducts a “comprehensive safety reset” across the site.
The decision, according to the South African miner, follows an increase in safety incidents at its flagship platinum operation.
A company spokesperson says that the group had recorded four fatal injuries in the financial year ended 30 June, followed by an additional two deaths in July.
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, in a separate statement, says that seven workers had died at Rustenburg since the beginning of 2026.
The Rustenburg complex – South Africa’s largest platinum producer – currently employs about 51,500 employees across its mining and processing operations.
Implats says the shutdown is expected to last four days, from 24-28 July, during which it will implement a safety reset program that includes a comprehensive workplace inspection and a series of training sessions.
The company also plans to implement additional safety assurance measures, such as appointing independent third-party specialists to assess existing safety systems and improving anti-collision technologies used in its equipment.
“This safety reset provides an important opportunity for engagement, learning, and recommitment. It allows us to honour those who have been affected by recent incidents, strengthen our controls, and re-establish the discipline required to operate safely,” Impala Rustenburg CEO Moses Motlhageng says.
“We remain resolute in our commitment to achieving zero harm and are united in our determination to strengthen the safety performance at Impala Rustenburg,” group CEO Nico Muller adds.
Implats estimates that the suspension will affect platinum group metal (PGM) production from Rustenburg for about eight days. The complex is forecast to produce between 1.67 million and 1.76 million ounces of PGMs in the current fiscal year.
Impala Platinum is a fully integrated platinum group metals producer with six mining operations, refining, and processing facilities.
