Specialist investment firm Adaptogen Capital is targeting a €1 billion ($1.61 billion) investment opportunity across European battery energy storage system (BESS) markets by 2030.
As part of the company’s approach, it is exploring capital raisings for 2027. The funds would help finance its initial European BESS assets, with an estimated requirement of €260 million in equity and €500 million in debt.
The company has developed a 1.2-gigawatt pipeline of Belgian BESS opportunities, with five initial projects in development and progressing towards final investment decisions.
Through its operating platform MVA Energy, Adaptogen Capital aims to address grid congestion and the integration of growing renewable generation, alongside a parallel German pipeline.
Adaptogen has also progressed a further 500-megawatt (MW) portfolio across two sites in Germany, located at key offshore wind high-voltage landing points on the transmission grid.
Adaptogen Capital Managing Director James Mills says grids across Europe are under growing pressure from the pace of renewable buildout, creating a clear investment case for well-located, grid-scale battery storage with firm connections, backed by structured revenue and debt facilities.
“We have spent the past three years building a pipeline that targets that opportunity, and our approach of committing capital once projects have reached final investment decision allows infrastructure investors to back assets where development risks have already been substantially reduced,” Mills says.
Going beyond the UK
Adaptogen’s European ambitions build directly on its UK experience. The company’s original fund, which closed in 2023, has been fully committed to developing and operating BESS assets through Varco Energy, with a follow-on co-investment raised in 2025.
Varco Energy’s operational projects include Native River — the UK’s longest-duration transmission-connected battery installation — and Sizing John Phase One.
Native River, located south of Liverpool, has a system capacity of 57MW and 138MW hours. It delivers grid-balancing services such as frequency regulation, reserve capacity, and load shifting to support renewable energy integration.
The phase-one Sizing John Project is located near St Helens and supports NESO in operating the Mersey Ring. The project is designed to allow for potential expansion as grid demand grows.
Adaptogen Capital says that investor appetite for European battery energy storage is strengthening and growing grid constraints reinforce the role of storage as critical energy infrastructure.
With few specialist BESS managers operating at scale across Europe, the company says its project-led approach is well aligned with the needs of infrastructure investors seeking exposure to a key asset class in the next phase of the energy transition.
