The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has announced Amanda Lacaze as its new Chair, following a board meeting in Perth on 26 May 2026. Lacaze replaces Andrew Michelmore, who served as chair most recently.
Michelmore has held executive leadership roles in the MCA off and on since 2013 and has extensive experience in the mining industry. He is currently also chair of Century, one of the largest US aluminium companies.
The MCA says Michelmore has led a strong effort to advance the industry, with CEO Tania Constable noting that “Andrew has been a tower of strength at a tumultuous time through his unwavering commitment and dedicated leadership”.
Lacaze is Managing Director of Lynas Rare Earths (ASX:LYC), with over 25 years of senior operational experience in the market.
Speaking at the Australian Financial Review Mining Summit, Lacaze noted the unprecedented environment facing the industry today and the strategic importance of Australia’s mining industry to the economy at home and globally.
“We have created a sophisticated, world leading industry that provides the foundation of Australia’s economic resilience and the inputs our trading partners need,” Lacaze says.
“Mining export earnings of $383 billion are forecast for the 2025-26 year and volumes are expected to reach almost historic peaks over the next two years.
“The breadth and wealth generation of our mining activities is quite extraordinary when you consider we only disturb about 1% of Australia’s land mass.
“Our prosperity and national strength leans heavily on our bulk exports, iron ore and coal, our traditional metals, and our new critical minerals — including not just my personal favourite, rare earths, but other specialty minerals such as lithium which are required for 21st century manufacturing.”
Lacaze also noted that while the industry serves significant benefits for Australia, it also makes valuable contributions globally, with a focus on contributing to key supply chains for precious metals and critical minerals.
In closing her speech, Lacaze noted that the continued growth and success of Australia’s mining industry is of top priority to maintain prosperity for Australians and the global community.
