A worker has died following an incident at Sierra Rutile’s (ASX:SRX) Area 1 operations in Sierra Leone.
The rutile producer has suspended operations while an initial safety review is undertaken.
Managing Director Theuns de Bruyn says Sierra Rutile has launched an investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic event and will fully cooperate with the relevant authorities on the ground in Sierra Leone.
“This is a very sad day for SRL and its people, and I offer the company’s deepest sympathies to our colleague’s family, friends and co-workers. Our focus is on supporting them during this trying time,” he says.
The fatality follows a three-day strike at Area 1 and the restart of operations in late May, which was ordered by the Sierra Leone Government.
According to Sierra Rutile, the government claimed the previous suspension of the rutile mine in the Moyamba and Bonthe districts of Sierra Leone was a breach of the Mines and Minerals Development Act.
