The Western Australian Government-backed Lumsden Point project at the Port of Port Hedland has hit major development milestones, with a key causeway completed and four land allocation agreements secured to support growing trade in renewable energy and bulk materials.
The first wharf is scheduled for completion in mid-2026 with operations to follow, before the second is prepared for completion and operation in late 2026.
The causeway spans 1km hosting a road with 12m-width as well as pipeline and logistics corridors for Australian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH), Kimberley Marine Support Base, Qube, and Toll to utilise.
Kimberley Marine Support Base, Qube (ASX:QUB), and Toll (ASX:TOL) will hold stevedoring and material handling operations at the project, while AREH intends to utilise the space for its renewables project.
Digga Civil has been contracted to build 2.4km of water mains to meet the project’s needs and connect the supply network within the Wedgefield Industrial Area.
Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King believes Lumsden Point is significant for the Pilbara region’s battery metals exports and renewable energy, while boosting the local economy.
“We’re already seeing jobs created during construction and a range of businesses signing on as customers, demonstrating the benefits of this project for the region,” King says.
The Australian Government will deploy $450 million into the development of multi-user facilities and berths from its greater $565 million initiative for port upgrades in the region, with the Western Australian Government contributing $96.6 million.
Pilbara Local Member Kevin Michel says the support for the project with new customers indicates the demand for multi-user facilities.
“Lumsden Point is a great opportunity for the Pilbara region, delivering trade and employment growth to ensure we remain the nation’s economic engine room long into the future,” Michel says.
