Gold price surge puts explorers in discovery spotlight

Gold’s latest rally is once again putting the precious metal front and centre, with its spot price sitting at around US$4,676 ($6,530) an ounce this morning, reaching its highest level since mid-May 2026.

This price increase comes as concerns over US debt management and fiscal sustainability persisted following the Treasury’s unexpected ramp up in longer-dated debt buybacks.

Trading Economics reports that the move pushed bond yields and the dollar lower, reviving the debasement trade and boosting gold’s appeal as an alternative store of value.

Over the past month, gold’s price has risen 14.28%, and is up 38.40% compared to the same time last year.

For gold producers, higher prices can translate directly into stronger margins and cashflow. But further down the mining chain, the rally is creating an engaging backdrop for the companies searching for gold deposits.

Cohort of explorers

This brings renewed attention to a cohort of Australian junior explorers taking different approaches to gold discoveries.

Among them are Antipa Minerals (ASX:AZY), Legend Mining (ASX:LEG), Green & Gold Minerals (ASX:GG1), and Australian Gold and Copper (ASX:AGC), each pursuing a different slice of Australia’s exploration landscape.

Antipa Minerals owns the Minyari Dome Project in Western Australia, which contains a 3.6 million ounce gold-equivalent resource.

Managing Director Roger Mason told Mining.com.au that Antipa has a large-scale development opportunity, with brownfields and greenfields opportunities to grow the resource base and expand development.

“Our Minyari Dome development opportunity is in the top three in terms of contained ounces for undeveloped gold deposits in Australia that have a resource grade better than one gram per tonne,” Mason says.

The Paterson Province is very much an underexplored region. We had a first-mover advantage into the area commencing in 2011.”

Mason adds that the Paterson Province is one of the “most exciting” gold-copper hubs in Australia. However, it is not fully recognised for its potential, as previously reported.

“Putting the Minyari development opportunity to one side for a moment, our sense is that the wider gold and copper discovery potential across the Paterson is still not fully recognised,” he says.

“For us, that is a very important point as we have a defined development asset at Minyari Dome, but also genuine greenfield and brownfield discovery potential across a very large wholly-owned 4,500km2 landholding.”

In 2024, a Scoping Study was completed which highlighted Minyari Dome to have a post-tax net present value of $1.8 billion and an internal rate of return of 110%. The study also outlined an initial combined open-pit and underground mine schedule of 30.2 million tonnes @ 1.5g/t gold for 1.5 million ounces.

Over 10 years of initial processing, it is also expected to have a nameplate throughput of 3 million tonnes per year.

Juniors exploring

In the Northern Goldfields region of Western Australia sits Legend Mining’s Pinnacle Well Project — a gold-copper-lead-zinc prospective asset covering 128km2.

Pinnacle Well is considered primarily prospective for intrusive related and structurally controlled vein-hosted gold mineralisation typical of Archean greenstone belts within the Yilgarn Craton, along with volcanic massive sulphide zinc-copper-lead-silver mineralisation.

In June 2025, Legend acquired the project by paying $50,000 cash to the project vendor, as well as granting a 1.5% gross royalty on the production of any minerals from the tenements.

One year later, Legend completed its first heritage survey on the project, advancing preparations for a maiden drilling program. The survey was designed to provide area clearance of ground-disturbing activities.

The company intends to finalise drill hole designs using pole-dipole induced polarisation modelling, rock chip and soil geochemistry, and findings from recent geological reconnaissance. Drilling is expected to begin following receiving the heritage survey report.

Over in Northwest Queensland, Green & Gold Minerals is advancing towards mine development at the Mt Wandoo Project. Mt Wandoo has an inferred resource of 32,000 ounces of gold and 387,000 ounces of silver.

The project contains a granted mining lease and is located 12km from an existing, idle processing facility. Modelling and studies are currently progressing and will be reported on in due course.

At the Sentinel prospect within the Mt Wandoo Project, hole RDR004 returned four gold-bearing intervals, including 2m @ 1.61g/t gold from 32m, containing 1m @ 2.97g/t gold, as previously reported.

New South Wales opportunities

Australian Gold and Copper is a discovery-driven explorer with precious metals prospective projects, covering 2,600km2, located in the South Cobar Basin of New South Wales.

Previously speaking to Mining.com.au, Managing Director Glen Diemar says the company is focused on growth through discovering additional ounces and acquisitions.

“We love that discovery moment,” Diemar says.

“We continue to do the type of generative exploration that leads to that type of discovery, while adding ounces through resource expansion drilling at Achilles and Evergreen.”

The Achilles Project contains a resource of 10.3 million tonnes at 116 grams per tonne silver-equivalent (AgEq) for 38.5 million ounces AgEq, with 58% of the resource indicated.

In mid-July, Australian Gold and Copper reported assays from its deepest drill hole at Achilles, intersecting mineralisation 540m down dip from surface.

Hole A3DD014 returned 26m @ 102g/t AgEq from 433m, including 15m @ 153g/t AgEq and 2m @ 770g/t AgEq from 440m.

“These deeper results are important for long-term planning,” Diemar says.

“They provide further confidence as we assess future underground mining potential, resource growth, and development options for the deposit.”

With gold prices pushing higher, the spotlight is not only on the companies already producing ounces, but on those still drilling, testing, and chasing the next gold discovery.
