Cosmo Metals (ASX:CMO) has defined a 12km-long zone of intense historical mining within the Bingara Goldfield portion of the 484.1km2 Bingara Project in New South Wales.
This news comes after light detection and ranging (LiDAR) survey which highlighted the 12km-long section from the Star of Bingara Mine in the north to the Lone hand mine in the south, encompassing the Spring Creek prospect.
Interpretation of the LiDAR data identified a zone of high-intensity historical gold mining activity with more than 1,180 historical pits and shafts and 180km-lines of drainage that has been worked for alluvial gold.
Managing Director Ian Prentice says the detailed digital terrain model generated from the data and the confirmation that the drilling completed at Spring Creek has tested only a small portion of what may be a big mineralised system.
“The opportunity to conduct systematic targeted exploration along two sets of 4-5km of strike that have been mined historically but remain very much underexplored, and all directly along strike from where previous drilling has returned shallow high-grade gold results, is incredibly compelling,” Prentice says.
Cosmo notes at Spring Creek, the combination of Comso’s reconnaissance rock chip sampling with the results from previous explorers’ support the intent of an upcoming maiden drilling program.
The program will test the southern extensions of the shallow east dipping mineralisation, coincident with the defined gold-arsenic in-soil anomaly, as well as test for potential steep dipping feeder zones.
Permitting is advancing at Spring Creek to enable the company to begin drilling.
In parallel, Cosmo will initiate a systematic rock chip sampling and geological mapping of the underexplored north and south strike extensions of the identified Star of Bingara to Lone Hand Trend.
Meanwhile, work is progressing on a follow-up rock chip sampling and mapping program at the Mt Everest and Mona Mine volcanic-massive-sulphide trend.
