A mine shaft collapse in China’s Yunnan province has left five people dead and another person injured, just one week after 82 died in a coal mine blast in Shanxi province.
According to state news agency Xinhua, the incident occurred around 4:30am on 31 May 2026. The authorities have not reported on what type of mine it was, only that it was an illegal mining operation.
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the incident.
This news follows the 22 May 2026 gas explosion at the Liushenyu Coal Mine that left 82 dead and 128 in hospital, as previously reported. The cause of this explosion has not yet been reported, but state media has said that the levels of carbon monoxide in the mine “exceeded limits”.
This latest incident follows a national safety meeting chaired by Premier Li Qiang on 30 May 2026, where he urged officials to conduct more thorough inspections, crack down on safety violations, and enhance oversight in high-risk industries such as mining.
