SRK China has appointed environmental, social, and governance and land contamination specialist Anne Gimonet to a Principal Consultant role as the consultancy firm further develops its ESG team.
Gimonet will work closely with her team in China, leveraging from SRK’s existing global ESG expertise, including collaboration with South African colleagues as Chinese links with the African mining sector continue to grow.
During her 15 years of international environmental consulting experience, Gimonet has led due diligence projects, advised on environmental matters, and implemented compliance programs across multinational corporations and Chinese state-owned enterprises in various industries.
Her role within SRK will focus on environmental due diligence with an emphasis on soil and groundwater contamination management.
Before joining SRK, Gimonet was the Head of Site Characterisation/Remediation Services at the China branch of an international environmental consultancy, where she managed large-scale, high-stakes projects for more than nine years.
SRK China Managing Director Pengfei Xiao says Gimonet’s unique expertise and knowledge of the Chinese business landscape will be instrumental to the firm.
“Her fluency in Mandarin and 12 years of experience living in the region will aid stronger connections with our local clients and stakeholders,” Xiao says.
Once an afterthought, ESG is now a central focus driven by investors, regulations, and end-clients with a growing emphasis on environmental governance and accountability, says Gimonet.
“ESG now needs to spearhead mine planning. ESG factors will determine whether mining projects are permissible, finance-able, investible, and insurable’ she continued,” she adds.
“A client will be in the most favourable situation if they can show how these factors have influenced the design of their project, future operational plans, and the vision for closure.”
