M&A Monday: First month sets scene for 2026

In January 2026, the mining and metals sector saw more than US$11 billion in financing and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) deals, according to the International Mining and Resources Conference Expo (IMARC).

This figure adds on from a global financing and M&A view of $139 billion worth in deals in the previous year.

Mining Beacon reports 91 M&A deals in 2025 across the mining and metals sector, which includes the major merger between Anglo American-Teck Resources for $53 billion.

A few deals appeared in the global resources industry last week, including Capricorn Metals (ASX:CMM), which entered a binding agreement with privately held AMMM Resources to acquire the Extension Hill and Mungada tenement package in Western Australia for a total consideration of $1.5 million.

The consideration includes an initial cash deposit of $100,000, which has already been paid, followed by $1.4 million in shares on completion of the acquisition.

Shares will be issued based on the five-day volume weighted average price prior to completion.

Capricorn will also make milestone payments, including $750,000 cash for a resource estimate greater than 75,000 ounces of gold, and another $750,000 in cash upon the decision to begin commercial mining operations.

Capricorn Executive Chairman Mark Clark says the acquisition of this tenement package expands to the company’s existing Mt Gibson exploration footprint and “adds highly prospective targets contiguous with existing tenure”.

“This provides Capricorn with an outstanding exploration opportunity with a view to adding meaningful additional ore sources to Mt Gibson Gold Project and the region,” Clark says.

Capricorn Metals is an Australian gold producer headquartered in Perth, Western Australia.

Strike and point for larger portfolio

StrikePoint Gold (TSX-V:SKP) has entered a definitive agreement to acquire 51 unpatented mining claims in the Como Mining District in Nevada from Newmont Mining’s (ASX:NEM) wholly owned subsidiary Fronteer Development.

The purchase and sale agreement comprises US$25,000 on signing, US$50,000 one year after execution, US$75,000 two years from execution, and US$150,000 three years from execution.

StrikePoint will also conduct milestone payments including $1.5 million within 120 days of a preliminary economic assessment on a 250,000 ounce gold equivalent deposit and $3.5 million within 120 days of commercial production.

The company says this acquisition consolidates its Hercules Gold Project, which is located in the Walker Lane region, allowing for expanded exploration of the southern portion of the property.

The Como Mining District is a past-producing area prospective for gold exploration, with historical surface sampling returning up to 166.62 grams per tonne gold, as well as up to 109.72g/t silver.

StrikePoint has acquired a historical database hosting 623 surface samplings in the area, with 93 returning grades greater than 1g/t gold.

The area has seen a limited amount of drilling, with highlighted intercepts including 12.19m @ 5g/t gold, including 3.05m @13.88g/t.

Sailing the Silver Storm

Silver Storm Mining (TSX-V:SVRS) has increased its balance sheet with C$2.18 million cash after divesting its capped production gross royalty for the Springer mine and mill property, located in Nevada, US.

The royalty was acquired in 2025, as a part of the company’s acquisition of issued and outstanding common shares of Till Capital.

The acquired portfolio comprises four mining royalties, which included the Springer royalty, which was capped at US$2.5 million.

CEO Greg McKenzie says the company acquired a transaction value of $7.2 million through Till Capital, including $6.2 million cash.

“The Springer royalty sale represented an opportunity to monetize one of our non-core royalty assets while adding financial flexibility and additional liquidity ahead of the potential restart of operations at the La Parrilla silver mine complex in the second quarter of 2026,” McKenzie says.

Silver Storm Mining is focused on advanced stage silver projects located in Durango, Mexico.
