LME copper stocks spike as market watches demand

A sharp rise in copper inventories is putting a fresh spotlight on the delicate balance between supply and demand in the global copper market.

London Metal Exchange (LME) copper inventories climbed for two consecutive trading sessions on 14 and 17 August 2026, with stocks rising by a cumulative 18,600 tonnes, according to the latest data by Shanghai Metals Market (SMM).

Inventories increased by 2,850 tonnes to 207,800 tonnes on 14 August before surging 15,700 tonnes to 233,600 tonnes on 17 August — a 9.1% increase across the two sessions.

In particular, warehouse inflows reached 17,500 tonnes on 17 August, driving a sharp rebound in inventories that day.

LME inventories refer to the total amount of physical industrial metal stored in approved warehouses around the world for the LME. These stocks show global supply and demand. When inventories go down, it often means demand is high. When they go up, demand may be weaker.

This news comes after LME copper inventories declined earlier this week, with exchange data showing stockpiles across the LME’s global warehouse network falling for 42 consecutive trading days. This is the longest run of declines since 2014, as previously reported.

The latest increase offers a notable counterpoint to the long-term narrative surrounding copper — the world is heading towards a structural supply deficit as electrification, renewable energy, grid investment, and data-centre expansion drive demand for the critical mineral.

As previously reported, the International Copper Study Group forecasts a 150,000-tonne deficit for 2026, pointing to the market’s first structural shortage since 2009. JP Morgan’s model pushes the anticipated shortfall even further, projecting a 330,000-tonne deficit.

While the inventory jump is significant, it should not necessarily be interpreted as a fundamental reversal in copper’s long-term outlook.

Instead, it highlights the complex dynamics facing the global copper industry, where short-term fluctuations in physical demand are playing out against the bigger challenge of bringing enough new supply online to meet future consumption.

Copper development

Established producers are under growing pressure to maintain output for ageing mines, improve recoveries, and extend mine life, while developers are racing to advance new projects through Feasibility Studies, permitting, and financing.

Revolver Resources’ (ASX:RRR) Dianne Copper Project in Queensland is a past-producing asset, made up of ‘very high-grade’ copper in a massive sulphide lens coincident with a broad, shallow area of continuous copper oxide mineralisation.

The project produced 63,758 tonnes of copper ore with an average grade of 22.7% from open-cut and underground operations between 1979 and 1983 before mining operations ceased.

In June 2026, Revolver finalised the layout of the proposed mine plan, ahead of a final investment decision, which is expected in due course. The final 3D earthworks and facilities layout implements a compact and environmentally conscious design to minimise operational footprint.

Mining, crushing, heap leaching, and cathode output scheduling are nearing completion.

Managing Director Pat Williams previously told Mining.com.au that 2026 will be a transformational year for Revolver.

“We’ve been on a nearly two-year journey to study, design, engineer, plan, and get ready for construction and operations. Albeit a very small, almost boutique, scale product,” Williams says.

Over in Western Australia, Anax Metals (ASX:ANX) is developing the Whim Creek Project, which has potential to produce 10,000–12,000 tonnes of copper equivalent metal annually.

Whim Creek is considered a technically and economically robust polymetallic project, with a strategic processing hub development located in the Pilbara region. The proposed processing hub will consist of crushing and ore sorting infrastructure, a new 400,000-tonne-per-year concentrator, and a refurbished heap leach facility capable of treating oxide, transitional, and supergene ore.

In late July 2026, Anax began front-end engineering design (FEED) work, intended to support a final investment decision targeted in Q4 2026. Alongside further engineering work across project infrastructure, the FEED program will deliver updated capital and operating cost estimates, a revised execution plan, and an updated financial model to support project financing.

Whim Creek has a pre-tax net present value of $501 million and an internal rate of return of 98%. In addition, the project has a free cash flow of $723 million, with an estimated capital expenditure of $91 million.

Searching for copper discoveries

Concurrently, explorers are searching for the next generation of large-scale copper deposits capable of supplying a market expected to require more of the critical mineral over the coming decades.

Nine Mile Metals (CSE:NINE) is exploring for copper in the Bathurst Mining Camp district in New Brunswick, Canada. The Bathurst Mining Camp is one of the largest volcanogenic massive sulphide camps in the world, covering 3,800km2, hosting 95 copper, lead, zinc, silver, and gold occurrences and 45 deposits.

At the Wedge Project, Nine Mile is conducting a 10,000m drilling program, focusing on newly discovered ‘high-grade’ zones on the western flank of the deposit.

Recently, drilling returned 16.5m @ 4.03% copper equivalent, and a 6.5m zone that returned 5.22% copper equivalent, as reported.

In Botswana, Leviathan Metals (TSX-V:LVX) is exploring within the Kalahari Copper Belt (KCB) through its Central Copper Project, which sits in the Zone 5 Corridor — host to the largest and ‘highest-grade’ known copper deposits within the KCB.

The 800km-long KCB hosts copper-silver deposits of the sediment-hosted stratiform copper type and is regarded as “one of the world’s most prospective areas for yet-to-be-discovered sediment-hosted copper deposits”, according to the US Geological Survey.

Earlier this month, Leviathan completed diamond drilling on the Central Project, with sulphides observed in most holes. Out of 14 holes, 12 displayed evidence of its target stratigraphy — known as the D’Kar-Ngwako Pan Formation contact.

Drilling also confirmed the presence of a domal structure at Central that was previously identified from ground and airborne survey data.

The rise in London Metal Exchange inventories highlights the complexity of the copper market. While higher stocks may signal softer near-term demand, they do little to ease the long-term challenge of securing enough copper for a rapidly electrifying global economy.

As demand continues to grow, companies across the copper pipeline will play a critical role in determining whether future supply can keep pace.
