Great Western Exploration (ASX:GTE) has completed a maiden reverse circulation drilling program at the Sumo niobium target, within the Yerrida North Project in Western Australia.
Last week, the $11.35 million market capitalisation company began drilling to test Sumo on a broad spaced drilling pattern, as well as to target the fresh-oxide weathering interface which is interpreted to be prospective for niobium enrichment.
The program comprised 15 holes for 992m of drilling and assays are anticipated to be received in June 2025.
Sumo measures 2km long by 1km wide and is supported by coincident pathfinder geochemistry and prospective for carbonite niobium mineralisation. The target lies 70km south-east of Sandfire Resources (ASX:SFR) DeGrussa Copper-Gold Project.
Niobium is a ductile refractory metal highly resistant to heat and wear. It is resistant to corrosion owing to the formation of a surface oxide layer.

About 90% of niobium use is attributed to the steel industry, predominantly as a micro alloy with iron. The addition of small, relatively cheap, amounts of niobium (much less than 1%) significantly increases the strength and decreases the weight of steel products.
This results in more economic, beneficial products for use in the construction industry, in gas and oil pipelines, and in the automotive industry where weight savings result in increased performance and fuel reduction.
The Yerrida North Project is located on the northern and western portion of the Yerrida Basin, 800km northeast of Perth, Western Australia.
