Globe Metals & Mining (ASX:GBE) has been granted an additional 12-month extension from the Malawi Mines and Minerals Regulatory Authority (MMRA) to begin operations at the Kanyika Niobium Project in Malawi.
The company now has until 27 September 2026 to commence mining operations at the project, marking the second 12-month extension offered since signing the mining development agreement in March 2023.
The Government of Malawi originally contracted Globe Metals & Mining to begin exploration within 18 months, bringing the company to 29 September 2024.
The deadline was then extended by another 12 months to 27 September 2025.
CEO Charles Altshuler says the company is grateful to both the Malawi Government and the MMRA for their clear support and confidence in Kanyika.
“The granting of this extension reflects the collaborative approach between Globe and our host government as we advance the Kanyika Project,” Altshuler says.
“Over the past year we have delivered key milestones, including signing the community development agreement, advancing our export processing zone approval, and engaging with potential cornerstone investors and offtake partners.”
The next extension period will see Globe pushing towards resettlement preparation late this year into early next year by engaging with the district commissioner for site-based assessments, conducting compensation processes for people affected by the site across the first half of next year, advancing early works and approvals required, and further community and social development initiatives.
“The Kanyika Project represents a once-in-a-generation development for Malawi and a critical contribution to the global supply of niobium,” Altshuler says.
Globe Metals & Mining is an Africa-focused explorer that intends to bring its Kanyika Niobium Project to production for niobium and tantalum products.
