Encounter Resources eyes catalysts as Yeneena drilling begins

Back in October last year, Encounter Resources (ASX:ENR) raised $25 million in capital from institutional investors.

Part of the rationale was to continue funding drilling across its most prospective targets. Those campaigns are now setting up the company for a number of potential catalysts.

Yesterday (23 June), Encounter announced that drilling has begun at the Yeneena Copper Project. The campaign is a mix of diamond and reverse circulation (RC) drilling, with the first assay results expected in August.

The majority of prior drilling at the Parbo copper prospect was completed by Chilean copper major Antofagasta (LSE:ANTO) under an earn-in agreement in the period 2012–2016,” Executive Chairman Will Robinson says.

The copper market and the proven prospectivity of the Paterson Province have changed considerably since that period.”

While prior drilling was very broad spaced (200–400m drill line spacing), it contained several high-grade copper intersections that remain open and will be tested in the current RC/diamond drill program.

Encounter currently has four rigs operating (two at Yeneena and two at Aileron) across two of Western Australia’s most highly prospective mineral provinces.”

He is not wrong about the different dynamics in the wider copper space.

Copper remains one of the strongest thematic plays in the market, with the growth of artificial intelligence and data centre infrastructure expected to increase demand for the metal.

The copper price has proved remarkably resilient despite challenging macroeconomic conditions this year, including higher interest rates and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, as well as the absence of major stimulus from the number one consumer, China.

These factors suggest a structurally undersupplied market and reinforce the need for the mining industry to act now and meet future demand.

In that context, Encounter appears well placed to benefit if Yeneena proves as prospective as expected.

It is also worth noting that Yeneena is only one of Encounter’s projects. The company has multiple drill campaigns underway, providing several opportunities for future value creation.

The coming months could provide several important catalysts for Encounter Resources
