The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) rose 0.12% this morning (27 August) adding 10.3 points, with the bourse at 8,945.90 points as at 10.20am AEST.
The index has gained 0.31% over the past five days, with five sectors advancing in line with the S&P/ASX 200 index.
Materials jumped 1.79% today, with energy companies as the best performers, including Boss Energy (ASX:BOE), Deep Yellow (ASX:DYL), and Paladin Energy (ASX:PDN).
Asian markets are set to open higher following the Dow Jones which finished the trading day higher by 0.3% (+136 points) to close at 45,418 points.
Earlier, markets in Europe had a weaker session as London’s FTSE and Germany’s DAX both declined.
The Australian dollar is firm against the major currencies and is buying US$0.65.
Gold is trading at US$3,338 ($5,139) per ounce with copper trading at US$4.431 per pound.
WTI Crude oil is selling for US$62.69 per barrel while Brent oil is higher at US$65.21 per barrel.
The spot iron ore price is trading at US$101.57 and one bitcoin is worth US$111,740 going into the Asian trading day.
The S&P/ASX200 is Australia’s leading share market index and contains the top 200 ASX-listed companies in terms of market capitalisation, and accounts for about 80% of the country’s equity market.
The index is designed to measure the performance of the 200 largest index-eligible stocks listed on the ASX by float-adjusted market capitalisation.
It is recognised as the institutional investable benchmark in the country.
