Western Mines gains funding to drill komatiite

Western Mines Group (ASX:WMG) has been awarded a $180,000 grant to fund further drilling across komatiite targets at the Mulga Tank Project in Western Australia.

Under the Western Australian Government’s co-funded Exploration Incentive Scheme (EIS), the funding will go towards 50% of direct costs for six exploration holes. The drillholes will target a 1.3km-long komatiite body within Mulga Tank.

Western Mines, which has a market capitalisation of $23.81 million, will also drill two of the holes with diamond tails north of the main body of the Mulga Tank Complex. This will target the komatiite channel system demonstrated by the first belt-wide drilling program last year.

Chairman Rex Turkington says this award will test the mineralised komatiite system in the Panhandle area.

“Previous EIS drilling has been very successful and we hope that continues,” Turkington says.

Komatiite is an ultramafic volcanic rock formed from hot, magnesium-rich lava characterised by low silica and high magnesium oxide content.

The Mulga Tank Project is an extensive magmatic nickel sulphide mineral system with an initial resource of more than 5.3 million tonnes of contained nickel.

Western Mines is a junior mineral explorer focused on a range of critical and battery minerals in Australia.
