Western Australian projects are set to have more investment certainty and timely decision-making, following the announcement of a new State Development Bill 2025.
The bill establishes a new framework for priority projects and state development areas, supported by a statutory coordinator general to support Premier Roger Cook in coordinating planning and approvals.
Premier Cook may designate projects of strategic significance, such as those creating jobs, delivering critical infrastructure, or supporting decarbonisation.
The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) says this reform is designed to reduce duplication, set clear timeframes, and ensure greater certainty for industry, while maintaining the state’s environmental and regulatory standards.
CEO Warren Pearce says this bill delivers a clear framework that gives companies confidence their projects will be assessed.
“Importantly, the creation of the Coordinator General role provides a single point of accountability to support the Premier, ensuring projects of strategic importance to Western Australia are progressed with solid timeframes and a clear pathway forward,” Pearce says.
The new role will provide oversight and coordination, helping reduce delays and drive progress for projects that deliver critical infrastructure, major capital investment, and job creation.
