TerraEye: Redefining mineral exploration with data and AI

TerraEye was born out of a simple but clear conviction, that mineral exploration can be faster, clearer, and more precise, and that the implementation of key technology can be used to provide geologists with the tools they need to make this happen.

In an industry that can often be stuck with slow workflows and fragmented datasets, TerraEye’s team is building a platform that brings together all available satellite data, automates the analysis, and provides a clean, evidence-based map to geologists, letting them know where to look next on their projects.

CSO Paweł Leśko describes the company’s mission to “narrow down the area to support exploration teams, to show them clearly and confidently, where on their parcel the highest potential is”.

The future of exploration is data-driven and companies like TerraEye are reshaping how geologists work, how they make decisions, and how the next generation of discoveries can be found based on proven data-backed evidence.

TerraEye’s team includes a range of experts in the field, geologists, data scientists, software engineers, and more, with the company focused on creating a platform that its users will find value in and return to over and over again. 

Product Owner Dr Wojciech Kuloza-Kaczan notes that he believes TerraEye provides something new to the market. 

“We have this advanced software that allows geologists to gather insights, providing precision, quality, and at the end, helping to narrow down areas where teams can go out to the field with clear objectives.”

TerraEye’s unified platform

TerraEye’s philosophy is shaped by a few main principles. While competitors can often focus on a single type of satellite data, mutispectral or hyperspectral, TerraEye believes that the true value comes from combining all satellite data that is available. 

“We are data agnostic in this sense,” Kuloza-Kaczan says. 

There is also a focus on speed, simplicity, and using evidence to support decisions. Output is accompanied by transparent explanations noting which layers were used, why they were selected, and how the interpretation was made.

The data is a pre-processed mosaic that can be adjusted for each individual’s needs. 

Serving miners of every scale

TerraEye serves the full spectrum of the mineral exploration market, from major mining houses, mid-tiers, juniors, and individual geologists, with a flexible subscription model that allows users to access the same core technology across the board. 

Bigger clients are able to scale up their solution with more advanced features and custom analytics. 

Kuloza-Kaczan notes the key pain points that he often hears from clients, including that early stage projects often lack field data, data rooms are overloaded, teams need to prioritize vast areas in limited time, evidence is needed to justify quick decisions, and investors want proof that exploration is data-driven.

“Everyone in this industry is hungry for information,” Kuloza-Kaczan says.

“TerraEye fills that gap by giving companies insights at the very beginning of a project, long before boots hit the ground.”

TerraEye also works with companies with mines or those with defined exploration targets that they want to extend or recognise in more detail. 

You don’t need to be that familiar with satellite data or the technology itself to become a sophisticated user of the platform. 

Onboarding is a seamless process and what’s more, the TerraEye team is on hand to provide round the clock support to help solve problems and provide detailed analysis.

Harnessing multispectral, hyperspectral, and radar for exploration

Kuloza-Kaczan notes that the solution consolidates all available satellite data — multispectral, hyperspectral, radar, and more and users are able to simply select what minerals they are looking for and where, and the platform can handle the rest. 

“We take the responsibility for data selection and processing, providing clear information on what to focus on with data backing up our analysis,”

Cutting costs, reducing risk

Cost management and risk management are two key value-adds that TerraEye brings to the market. 

“When you have over a thousand square kilometers of a new project to manage, you need to decide where to invest the time and the money, so instead of spending days on data selection, you can use our AI-driven outputs and in a short period of time you can have that key data you need,” Kuloza-Kaczan says. 

Building trust in AI

Kuloza-Kaczan notes that three years ago when TerraEye was starting out, people had a general understanding about remote sensing satellite data, but there wasn’t that much trust in it. People needed to see the proof.

TerraEye has spent the last few years building industry trust, in parallel with building the platform. 

“The industry now is smart enough to know that they need to adopt AI tools,” Kuloza-Kaczan says. 

“Not everyone knows how to use it perfectly, but everyone wants to use it because they see the power in it.”

Leśko also notes that using a data-backed platform also provides assurance to stakeholders that a company is using an unbiased, data-backed approach.

Geophysics and Ignacy: TerraEye’s next steps

As a product owner, Kuloza-Kaczan is excited about what’s to come from TerraEye in the coming months. 

“Geophysics will be our next aim. We have this really strong background in the spectral imaging side, so we’ll be integrating that with the next data sets,” Kuloza-Kaczan says. 

The second big development is called Ignacy. The company has implemented different agents within this AI chat with different specialities that will serve the clients, whether its for remote sensing or geology. 

Ignacy will take the client’s questions, put them in the right context, and give it to the relevant agents to work out. It’s quite scalable, which is what makes it exciting to TerraEye. 

Leśko highlights that TerraEye’s solutions are fast, precise, and fact- and research-based.

“We’re implementing new things that weren’t available five years ago, and always looking ahead to see what else we can bring to the market.”

The team wants their clients to have fun with the solution.

“You don’t need to struggle with the little things like data processing,” Leśko says. 

“We want our algorithms to handle that and to help you as a geologist or as a manager to deal with the project quickly and get data-based proof from the outset.”
