S&P/ASX200 barely moves to close a few points down

The S&P/ASX200 barely moved on Friday (23 August) to close down just 3.10 points to 8,023.90 with just one mining stock in the bottom five, Whitehaven Coal (ASX:WHC).

There were no mining stocks in the top five in this index yesterday, which has gained 0.66% over the past five days but is currently 1.53% off of its 52-week high.

On 1 August, the S&P/ASX200 broke records when it gained 22.40 points to 8,114.70 to close at a new all-time high for the index. Historically, the previous peak for the index was 8,010 in July this year.

However, the ASX became a bit of a rollercoaster as it in the days to follow that peak it and the next day in particular it retreated 177.40 points to close at 7,937.30 following US stocks down on suggestions of a slowing US economy.
