ASX markets

S&P/ASX 200 unwinds early gains  

The S&P/ASX 200 ended the day in the red, retreating 58.20 points, or 0.69%, to close the session at 8,359.40 points. 

Over the last five days, the index is virtually unchanged, but is currently 1.21% below its 52-week high.

Sectors were mixed, with six of the 11 sectors lower at the closing bell on Tuesday (26 November). Energy dipped the most with a 2.91% retreat, followed by the financial sector which slid 1.85%. Materials edged back 0.18%.

Consumer staples was the best performing sector, gaining 1.06% on Tuesday and 0.66% over the past five days.

Falling oil prices is good news for commuters but saw Karoon Energy (ASX:KAR) and Beach Energy (ASX:BPT) lose ground today. Karoon slid 4.36% to $1.32, while Beach dipped 4.25% to $1.24.

Oil prices were impacted by reports of an imminent ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

Gold miner Vault Minerals (ASX:VAU) was also in the bottom five as gold edged back to around US$2,630 ($4,051) an ounce. The company slipped 4.41% to $0.325.

The S&P/ASX200 is Australia’s leading share market index and contains the top 200 ASX-listed companies in terms of market capitalisation, and accounts for about 80% of the country’s equity market. The index is designed to measure the performance of the 200 largest index-eligible stocks listed on the ASX by float-adjusted market capitalisation

It is recognised as the institutional investable benchmark in the country.
