Simon Trott joins Rio Tinto as new CEO

Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) has appointed Simon Trott as the company’s Chief Executive, following Jakob Stausholm stepping down from the position, effective from 25 August.

Trott, currently Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore CEO, has over 25 years’ experience in roles across a wide range of commodities and geographies, with a focus on values-based performance culture and strengthening partnerships with stakeholders.

Previously as Rio Tinto’s first CCO, Trott established the company’s commercial operations, unlocking efficiency and deepening strategic customer relationships. Prior to this, he held Managing Director roles across multiple Rio Tinto commodities and geographies.

Chairman Dominic Barton says Trott came into the iron ore business at a time of challenges and has been instrumental in rebuilding the culture and strengthening relationships.

“Under his leadership iron ore has become a centre of innovation for the group, driving operational excellence, technology, and operation model optimisation – levers Simon can now bring to Rio Tinto at scale,” Barton says.

Trott says the progress made over recent years gives the company the foundation to build on and focus to deliver improved performance.

Matt Holcz, currently Managing Director of Rio Tinto’s Pilbara Mines, will be providing interim support in the Iron Ore CEO role until a permanent appointment is made.

Rio Tinto is a globally diversified mining company operating in 35 countries where 60,000 employees are working. The company’s portfolio includes iron ore, copper, aluminium, and a range of other minerals and materials that are needed for the world to cut carbon emissions to net zero.
