Scott Technology’s (NZX:SCT) Rocklabs business unit has secured a third automation project with mining giant Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) at the West Angelas Iron Ore Mine in Western Australia.
The project will automate the minerals laboratory at the West Angelas mine site, enabling the processing of 700 mineral samples daily. The project is set to improve safety and optimise laboratory operations.
Scott Technology’s semi-automated Rocklabs system ensures consistent, high-quality data to support smarter decision-making and optimise site performance. The company says by reducing the need for manual handling, the system lowers the risk of human error and improves operational efficiency.
The system has an enclosed design, combined with advanced dust extraction technology which further reduces silica exposure.
CEO Mike Christman says this project builds on the strength of the company’s decade-long partnership with Rio Tinto.
“By delivering innovative products and solutions, we’re helping Rio Tinto achieve its goals of safer, more efficient, and sustainable operations, while ensuring their sites remain at the forefront of modern mining practices,” Christman says.
The West Angelas mine, located in the Pilbara region, is considered a vital hub for Rio Tinto’s iron ore operations and contributes to the company’s overall output with an annual production capacity of nearly 30 million tonnes.
Scott Technology delivers smart automation and robotic solutions that transform industries by making businesses safer, more productive, and more efficient.
Rio Tinto is a global mining company that operates in 35 countries. The company is focused on iron ore, copper, aluminium, and a range of other minerals needed for the world to cut carbon emissions to net zero.
