Queensland budget outlines record infrastructure investment

The Queensland Government’s 2025-26 State Budget handed down earlier yesterday (24 June) has highlighted a record $116.8 billion infrastructure investment ahead of the 2032 Olympics as debt concerns weigh on the state balance sheet.

This news comes after the state government released its 2032 Delivery Plan, which allows the 2032 Olympic Games, held in Brisbane, to reach beyond the state’s capital city and enable Queensland to benefit from the infrastructure and transport being established.

As part of the $116.8 billion record investment, $9 billion will be allocated to the Bruce Highway upgrade, The Wave all the way to the Sunshine Coast Airport, and Faster Rail to the Gold Coast.

As Mining.com.au previously reported, one of the key developments being established is the new stadium in Victoria Park in Brisbane, which is expected to seat up to 63,000 spectators.

According to budget papers, constructing the new stadium in Victoria Park could require at least 15,000 tonnes of steel.

For comparison, the new Wembley Stadium — the largest stadium in the UK — required 23,000 tonnes of steel products before it was completed to seat up to 90,000 seats.

Treasurer David Janetzki says this is a delivery budget that puts the government’s promises into action and sets the foundation for the fresh start Queensland needs.

“The Budget paves a pathway to Budget repair which sustainably funds the programs, services and infrastructure needed to lay the foundation of a fresh start for Queensland’s future,” Janetzki says.
