Qantas (ASX:QAN) will launch two new routes from Perth to Newcastle and Hobart this year, in support of Western Australia’s mining sector and greater connectivity for travellers to and from the state.
From September, QantasLink will be the only airline offering a direct flight between Perth and Newcastle.
The new flights will be operating three times a week and will provide more than 45,000 seats each year between the two cities, supporting FIFO workers and mining customers with a non-stop air service into Western Australia.
A direct Perth-Hobart service will also be reinstated for the first time since 2023 and also operate three times a week most months of the year, adding an additional 32,000 seats annually.
The flights will be operated by QantasLink’s Airbus A319 aircraft, which currently operates intra Western Australia flights particularly for the resources sector, have 150 economy seats.
QantasLink CEO Rachel Yangoyan says the direct services will not only boost inbound visitors to Western Australia but offer more opportunities for those working in the resource sectors across the country with improved options for their travel.
Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer Perth Airport Kate Holsgrove says the introduction of new domestic services shows Qantas’ commitment to Western Australia and growing its network into Perth Airport.
“The new routes will provide a convenient option for both business and leisure travellers. It’s great news for Australia’s tourism industry as the services will promote increased visitation to Western Australia from New South Wales and Tasmania and will also provide a direct link for Western Australians wanting to discover Tasmania and northern New South Wales,” Holsgrove says.
