Port Hedland January iron ore exports take 5.6% dip on softening Asian demand

Port Hedland iron ore export volumes declined by 5.6% during January 2022, with sales softening broadly across key Asian partners.

Sales to China decreased by almost 4% month-on-month to 40,454,471 tonnes, with the country preparing for the Winter Olympic Games.

The figure represented a 13.8% increase in tonnage compared to the same month in 2021.

Sales to Japan dropped by over 31% month-on-month, while shipments to South Korea recorded a 7.4% decline.

Exports of manganese ore via Port Hedland were down by 53% to 102,300 tonnes, while spodumene concentrate exports saw a 67% drop to 20,626 tonnes.

Copper concentrate exports declined by 6.6% to 22,583 tonnes, with Japan and the Philippines accounting for total export volume.
