PMET Resources (TSX:PMET) has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mitsui & Co (TYO:8031) and Microwave Chemical (TYO:9227) to evaluate innovative microwave calcination technology for its flagship Shaakichiuwaanaan Lithium Project in Québec.
The collaboration builds on PMET’s recently announced concept study, which identified a potential pathway for producing battery-grade lithium carbonate onsite.
It brings together each partner’s core competency: PMET’s lithium resource ownership, Mitsui’s project development capabilities, and MWCC’s proprietary microwave calcination technology.
PMET’s Chief Executive Officer Ken Brinsden says that the partnership is a “direct extension” of the company’s recently outlined downstream growth strategy for Shaakichiuwaanaan.
“Our concept study identified a potential pathway to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate on site, and microwave calcination now represents an opportunity to evaluate one of the key enabling technologies that could support that vision,” Brinsden says.
“This MoU… is an important next step in assessing how Shaakichiuwaanaan can leverage Québec’s low-cost renewable hydroelectricity into a more integrated, Western-facing lithium supply chain that supports Québec, Canada and allied markets.”
Following the completion of pilot plant testing by MWCC, the parties will review the results to discuss future commercialisation pathways. They may also evaluate any potential government funding opportunities that align with critical minerals strategies or clean energy objectives.
