The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has appointed Newmont (NYSE:NEM) CEO Tom Palmer as its new Chair, succeeding Iván Arriagada, CEO of Antofagasta (LSE:ANTO).
ICMM President Rohitesh Dhawan says Palmer’s appointment comes as the council embarks on its new strategy to drive responsible mining practices under a consolidated standard “while enhancing dialogue and engagement with our stakeholders”.

“Tom (pictured) has led by example in this regard, having chaired ICMM’s Social Performance Advisory Group and through his genuine sustainability leadership within our industry,” says Dhawan.
“I am very grateful to Ivan for his leadership which saw ICMM make significant progress in the last two years. Key milestones included our landmark Position Statements on Nature, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and updated commitments on Indigenous Peoples, and significant progress on members’ implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management and the development of a Consolidated Responsible Mining Standard.”
ICMM is governed by its council, which comprises the CEOs of its 24 member companies. The Chair is appointed from within this group and serves in the position for about two years.
Palmer notes that Newmont is a founding member of ICMM, sharing its vision for a safe, just and sustainable mining industry.
“My focus will be on building support across the sector for a consolidated mining standard. I believe this to be key to enhancing the reputation of the industry and give stakeholders confidence that the materials we mine are done so in a responsible manner,” he says.
Arriagada says he is proud of the progress the ICMM has made, especially on the issues of tailings management, nature, diversity, equity and inclusion and better engagement with Indigenous peoples.
