Things are heating up in the Mount Isa region, with Hammer Metals (ASX:HMX) in the spotlight for its resource base and exploration portfolio.
As reported by Mining.com.au in June, Larvotto Resources (ASX:LRV) placed a bid to acquire Hammer Metals through a court-approved scheme of arrangement.
The binding scheme implementation deed would add 530,000 tonnes of copper equivalent JORC resources to Larvotto’s holdings via the acquisition of Hammer’s Mt Isa portfolio.
Based on Larvotto’s closing share price of $1.33 on 5 June 2026, the scheme consideration implies an offer price of $0.06 per Hammer share, a fully diluted equity value for Hammer of around $54 million, and an 18% premium to Hammer’s closing share price on 4 June 2026.
However, on 3 August Austral Resources (ASX:AR1) submitted a definitive written and binding proposal to acquire Hammer Metals by way of a scheme of arrangement.
The proposal values $0.087 per Hammer share or around $80.7 million in aggregate, comprising 1.29 Austral shares for each Hammer share held, valued at $0.080 per share, alongside $0.007 per Hammer share of implied value through shares in Carnegie Exploration.
If this deal goes through, Hammer shareholders are expected to have an aggregate ownership of around 31.1% of the enlarged Austral.
The total consideration for this transaction represents a premium of 50.8% to the offer price listed in Larvotto’s bid.
Hammer Metals informed Larvotto that the Austral proposal is considered to be a superior proposal.
Larvotto was offered five business days to formally provide a matching, equivalent, or superior proposal. The matching period expires on Monday 10 August 2026.

Mount Isa transforming regional Queensland
In May this year, the Australian and Queensland Governments began the Mount Isa Transformation Study — an initiative aimed at strengthening the area’s copper industry.
The Mount Isa Transformation Study will assess the full copper value chain across North West Queensland regions, from Mount Isa to Townsville, to ensure long-term industrial capability and regional growth opportunities.
Hammer Metals’ Kalman Project, located in the region, has a resource estimate of 39.2 million tonnes @ 1.1% recovered copper equivalent.
Both Austral Resources and Larvotto Resources have copper assets in the Mount Isa region.
The region’s most famous copper mine is none other than Glencore’s (LSE:GLEN) Mount Isa Mines, which was closed in the second half of 2025 after six decades of copper mining.
Queensland’s copper industry is a cornerstone for the state’s mineral output. In 2023, the state’s copper industry directly employed 5,000 people and contributed $2.7 billion to Australia’s annual export revenue.
The commodity is a key focus for explorers, with $163 million contributed to copper exploration expenditure in 2023, equalling around 46% of total exploration costs.
Queensland accounts for around half of Australia’s total refined copper output, contributing more than 200,000 tonnes of annual refined copper — equivalent to around 1% of global copper production from the state alone.
