Australia’s only pure play bauxite producer Metro Mining (ASX:MMI) on 20 November 2023, achieved a calendar year record production and sales milestone at its Bauxite Hills Mine.
Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Simon Wensley says the 4 million tonnes record puts the company’s 2023 sales target of 4.5-5Mt well within reach from Bauxite Hills, located at the Skardon River in Far North Queensland
“The Metro team, together with our contract partners, have worked incredibly hard to reach this milestone. The rates currently being achieved provide high confidence that the 7Mtpa production rate will be achieved in 2024.”
Wensley notes that in another milestone for Metro, on 21 November 2023 the official naming ceremony for its Offshore Floating Terminal, the Ikamba, was held in Shenzhen, China.
The vessel’s name Ikamba means saltwater crocodile in the Ankamuthi language.
The naming ceremony was attended by 3 Ankamuthi Elders, Dale Salee, Charles Woosup and Anna Tamwoy, with Tamwoy being the vessel’s ‘godmother’. The naming ceremony signifies the nearing completion of the Ikamba’s refurbishment activities, and it will soon be ready to depart China for mobilisation to Australia.
Bauxite is used to make aluminium, a critical and strong growth metal in the energy transition.
