Materials jump amid ASX fall

The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) has lost 36.5 points this morning (2 September), trading at 8,891.2 points as at 10.25am AEST.

The index has lost 0.50% over the past five days, with six sectors performing lower in line with the S&P/ASX 200 index. 

The materials sector has continued to rise this morning, up 1.26% with Perseus Mining (ASX:PRU), Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR), and Ramelius Resources (ASX:RMS) making the top five gains list.

Asian markets are set to open lower this morning in line with the ASX.

The Dow Jones fell 0.2% to finish the trading day down 92 points to close at 45,545 points.

Earlier, markets in Europe had a strong session as London’s FTSE rose and Germany’s DAX stronger.

The Australian dollar is weaker against the major currencies and is buying US$0.65.

Gold is trading at US$3,338 ($5,092) per ounce with copper at US$4.431 per pound.

WTI Crude oil is selling for US$62.69 per barrel while Brent oil is higher at US$65.21 per barrel.

Iron ore is trading at US$101.57 per tonne and one bitcoin is worth US$107,909 going into the Asian trading day.

The S&P/ASX200 is Australia’s leading share market index and contains the top 200 ASX-listed companies in terms of market capitalisation, and accounts for about 80% of the country’s equity market. 

The index is designed to measure the performance of the 200 largest index-eligible stocks listed on the ASX by float-adjusted market capitalisation.

It is recognised as the institutional investable benchmark in the country.
