Materials charging declines on ASX

The materials sector is swaying the declines on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) this morning (23 June), with the platform dropping another 58 points by 0.68% to a total of 8,447.5 points at 10.35am (AEST).

Recent sessions on the S&P/ASX200 have seen the materials sector leading the declines, decreasing 4.26% today, while the energy sector thrives with a 5.31% increase.

Though sitting along in the negatives with four other sectors, materials did not make the top five for declines.

On the tail of doubling its mineral resource estimate of the Fletcher Zone, Westgold Resources (ASX:WGX) is the only mining company charting the top five gains this morning. Boosting its trading price by 5.13%, the company is now trading at $3.02 per share.

The S&P/ASX200 is Australia’s leading share market index and contains the top 200 ASX-listed companies in terms of market capitalisation, and accounts for about 80% of the country’s equity market. The index is designed to measure the performance of the 200 largest index-eligible stocks listed on the ASX by float-adjusted market capitalisation.

It is recognised as the institutional investable benchmark in the country.
