Livium involves Iondrive’s DES technology

Livium (ASX:LIT) has signed a binding term sheet with Iondrive (ASX:ION) to utilise its deep eutectic solvent technology (DES) for clean energy waste recycling practices.

The company will supply Iondrive with waste streams of solar panels, lithium-ion battery black mass, rare earth element magnets, and other samples to evaluate recovery pathways and commercial scalability.

Livium will retain stakes in sample generation, while Iondrive holds full ownership for all DES property.

The parties will collaborate to commence negotiations of binding agreements discussing the supply and locations of processing units across the next 21 months.

Livium Managing Director Simon Linge says the company is pleased to partner with Iondrive on this initiative as its focus remains on the recycling process of lithium-ion batteries.

“Our strategy for solar and rare earths leverages our core capabilities, which includes accessing and processing customers’ problem waste,” Linge says.

“Combining Iondrive’s innovative DES technology with our current reliable supply of black mass with the emerging capability in solar panels, and rare earth magnets, has the potential to unlock new recovery pathways and accelerate the development of a domestic processing of Australia’s clean energy waste.” 

Iondrive CEO Ebbe Dommisse describes the partnership to provide access to real-world feedstocks and as a direct source to scale the DES technology.

“This agreement aligns perfectly with our strategy to target battery, solar and magnet recycling – markets where sustainable solutions for recovering valuable metals are urgently needed,” Dommisse says.

Iondrive is focused on creating a metal extraction process using DES technology.

Livium intends to lead a global transition to produce lithium sustainably, in line with the global shift to electrification.
