Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR) CEO Tony Ottaviano says the lithium market is improving and buyers have confidence to engage competitively, following its inaugural online action.
Through Metalhub’s secure digital marketplace, the digital spot sales auction is for 10,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate for loading in January 2026.
Over 50 qualified buyers from nine countries participated, with a winning bid of US$1,254 per tonne for SC6.0-equivalent product.
Liontown, which has a market capitalisation of $4.31 billion, says the outcome demonstrates the power of giving prospective customers equitable and competitive access to quality products through the Metalshub platform.
The company plans to hold further online auctions on the platform in 2026 and beyond, as part of ongoing operations.
“This is an outstanding result and a clear validation of our strategy,” Ottaviano says.
“We believe a transparent, tangible, and auditable digital auction would strengthen price discovery for spodumene concentrate.”
This news comes amid lithium hydroxide gaining prominence due to its sustainability for high-nickel cathode chemistries.
As Mining.com.au reported today (20 November), the market for lithium hydroxide is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23.51% from 2024 to 2029, reaching some 564.78 kilotons of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) by 2029.
Lithium’s downstream processing market, encompassing the conversion of raw lithium into battery-grade lithium hydroxide and carbonate, is experiencing significant transformation, as reported.
This evolution is driven by technological advancements, geopolitical shifts, and increasing demand for electric vehicles, clean energy storage, and Battery Energy Storage Systems, among others.
The critical battleground from now to 2030 is downstream conversion – refining into lithium hydroxide or lithium salts, cathode precursor manufacture, and battery recycling. The raw ore business will increasingly act as a feedstock commodity.
Liontown Resources is a battery minerals provider which controls two lithium deposits in Western Australia and aims to expand the portfolio through exploration, partnerships, and acquisitions.
