Janus Electric (ASX:JNS) has received multiple orders from Ability Trimodal in Southern California, US, as part of the company’s international expansion strategy for the electrification of heavy transport.
The company will deliver two Janus battery-swapping class 8 prime movers in the North American market. The prime movers will be converted by Janus’ authorised US dealer Electric Vehicle Choice (EVC).
Under Project Battery Swap, valued at US$1.25 million, Promise Energy will install a Janus Charge and Change station, integrated with onsite solar, at Ability Trimodal’s Carson site to support rapid battery swaps and energy management.
Founder Lex Forsyth says by pairing battery swap with onsite solar at Ability Trimodal’s Carson facility, the company is addressing the two big barriers to zero-emissions drayage – downtime and grid constraints.
Ability Trimodal head coach Greg Owen adds that battery swapping makes sense for drayage as it fits out class 8 duty cycles, refuels in about four minutes, and uses less depot space than rows of tethered chargers.
“It also allows us to couple the station with rooftop solar for clean, reliable energy. We’re excited to be the first fleet bringing Janus’ solution to the US drayage and trucking market,” Owens says.
Janus Electric intends to complete software and ecosystem service agreements and prepare a conversion agreement to be fit for purpose within the US market.
The company also plans to expand capacity and sites based on contracted demand and demonstrated economics.
Janus Electric’s Project Battery Swap aims to redefine the future of heavy road transport. The project is designed to prove a replicable commercial model for the US drayage market.
The project is a strategic collaboration to confirm the commercial viability of the Janus truck conversion and service ecosystem in the US market. The pilot will test the scalability of Janus’ charge station-as-a-service and battery-as-a-service models, aiming to demonstrate low-downtime, zero emission freight delivery.
