Green steel, lower emissions Ensō on

Tokyo Steel Japan has launched a new proprietary green steel brand called ‘enso’ as part of its focus om the ‘circular economy’.

Executive Officer GM of International Sales Department Hisanori Sakai says Tokyo Steel is by definition a low-carbon emission producer and the enso brand is embodiment of its quest for steel products to attain even lower levels of emissions.

“Tokyo Steel will continue to work towards achieving the lowest possible levels of embodied carbon emissions with the application of proprietary technological advances and enhanced levels of renewable energy in the production process,” he says.

The Ensō circle holds deep symbolism and cultural significance in Japan and represents various concepts including eternity, infinity, harmony and balance, and the cyclical nature of life.

Tokyo Steel’s enso brand has been developed in partnership with independent global steel trading company Stemcor.

The circular enso logo transitions from charcoal to green to symbolise the evolution from carbon intensive production to green steel.

Tokyo Steel achieves lower embodied carbon emissions through the use of electric arc production utilising recycled steel scrap, applying highly efficient operating processes and, through the elimination of certain emission-intensive steps involved in the traditional blast furnace process.

The enso product range will initially include Hot Rolled Coil and Hot Rolled Plate, with plans to expand the range downstream over time.

As part of Tokyo Steel EcoVision 2050, Tokyo Steel has an established plan to reduce CO scope 1 and 2 emissions by 60% by 2030 and achieve virtually zero scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2050.
