Newmont (ASX:NEM) has confirmed that a 47-year old employee has been killed following an accident at its Tanami gold mine in Central Australia on 4 February 2026.
The company put out a statement via ABC news saying “our thoughts are with the individual’s family, friends, and colleagues during this very difficult time”.
“Emergency response procedures were immediately activated, and relevant authorities have been notified and are attending the site.
“Newmont will provide our full support to assist with the investigation into this tragic accident.”
Following the accident, all activities at Tanami have been suspended.
A spokesperson for the Northern Territory police has noted that the police were notified of the death at around 4pm on 4 February and officers from Yuendumu were attending the investigation and establishing a crime scene.
NTWorkafe has also commenced an inquiry into the incident, noting that initial enquiries indicate a potential failure of a winch during a lift as a contributor factor.
This isn’t the first serious accident to take place at Tanami. In November 2016, the company reported an incident involving the flushing of chemical reagent lines as part of shutdown preparations where 12 people became ill after exposure to sulphurous fumes.
