Coronado CFO to step up as chief executive

Coronado Global Resources (ASX:CRN) has appointed current CFO Barrie van der Merwe as chief executive officer and managing director, effective 1 August.

van der Merwe has served as CFO and as part of the executive leadership team since 2025 and brings over three decades of mining industry experience to the role.

Chairman Greg Pritchard says the board is ‘delighted’ with van der Merwe’s appointment.

“Barrie has made a significant contribution to Coronado during his tenure as chief financial officer and understands our operations, customers, shareholders, and changes required in the business very well,” Pritchard says.

“The board believes Barrie is the right leader for a phase during which the business needs to be returned to profitability and reduce debt to open up new strategic options.”

Coronado notes interim CEO Gerry Spindler will remain on the board as a non-executive director following the transition.

“Barrie cares for Coronado, our operations, and our customers, and I am confident he is the right person to lead the company,” Spindler says.

van der Merwe says he plans to focus on driving safety culture and business performance to return the company to profitability and reduce debt levels.

“Coronado has long-life assets, talented and committed employees, and an important role in supplying metallurgical coal to the steel industry and energy coal to Queensland,” van der Merwe says.

“I am excited by the hard work that lies ahead.”

Coronado says Sandeep Deoji will serve as interim CFO from 1 August until a permanent appointment is made.

Coronado Global Resources is a producer of metallurgical coal, with operations in Australia and the US.
