Canada unveils new nuclear strategy

The Canadian Government has launched a Nuclear Energy Strategy aimed at doubling the industry’s workforce by 2050 and mobilising billions of dollars in public and private investment into what it describes as a “key strategic asset”.

As demand for clean and secure energy rises, the strategy, announced by Minister of Energy and Natural Resources the Honourable Tim Hodgson, reinforces Canada’s commitment to affordable and reliable energy and its broader transition to net zero by 2050.

Highlighting Canada’s decades-long leadership in the sector, the strategy states nuclear energy will remain essential to the country’s future.

“It provides non-emitting, dependable baseload power, backed by a strong domestic supply chain built on over 70 years of Canadian expertise, innovation, and intellectual property.

“Nuclear energy contributes 13% of our national electricity supply, and it adds $22 billion to Canada’s economy every year through the operation of 17 Canadian CANDU (Canada deuterium uranium) reactors at home and the servicing of nine reactors abroad in countries like Romania, India, and South Korea.”

The strategy centres on four key pillars: building new nuclear capacity across the country, strengthening Canada’s role as a global supplier and exporter, expanding uranium production and fuel opportunities, and developing homegrown nuclear innovations.

According to the government, the strategy is designed to unlock investment in nuclear innovation and research, strengthen regulatory leadership for nuclear projects, and ensure development proceeds alongside commitments to Indigenous rights and environmental protection.

According to Hodgson, Canada intends to become a “modern energy superpower” by leveraging its expertise.

“Canada has long been a nuclear leader — and we will continue to lead, under our new Nuclear Energy Strategy, Hodgson says.

“Together with all members of Team Canada, we are taking action to ensure we have a co-ordinated, strategic approach to diversifying nuclear industry exports and bringing economic growth and security and affordable, reliable power to all Canadians.”

Canada’s operating reactors are concentrated in Ontario and New Brunswick, while all active uranium mining is located in Saskatchewan.

Major producers and emerging explorers

Cameco (TSX:CCO) is one of the world’s largest uranium fuel suppliers, focused on ‘high-grade’ reserves and low-cost operations across approximately 1.8 million acres in Saskatchewan.

The company’s operations are licensed to produce over 30 million pounds of uranium concentrates annually and hold proven and probable mineral reserves exceeding 433 million pounds.

Against this backdrop of renewed national ambition for nuclear energy, a cohort of junior explorers is positioning itself to support future uranium demand in the country.

Skyharbour Resources advances flagship projects and JV drilling

Skyharbour Resources (TSX-V:SYH) holds one of the largest exploration portfolios in Canada’s Athabasca Basin, which CEO Jordan Trimble notes currently accounts for around 20% of global primary uranium production.

The company is advancing its two flagship projects, Moore Lake and Russell Lake — part of a joint venture with Denison Mines (TSX:DML) — while managing partner-funded exploration across another 14 assets under its prospect generator model.

Skyharbour recently outlined exploration plans with joint venture partner Orano Canada at the 49,635-hectare Preston Lake Uranium Project, including a helicopter-borne gravity radiometry survey and a diamond drilling program totalling up to 3,500m.

Canada’s renewed push to scale up nuclear capacity is drawing greater attention to the Athabasca Basin, where Skyharbour is steadily building momentum across its flagship and partner-funded projects.

As Ottawa moves to expand uranium production, investment, and nuclear innovation, companies with established land positions and active exploration programs could play an important role in supporting the country’s future supply needs.
