Canada Nickel picks Komatsu for $1.51 billion Crawford fleet

Canada Nickel (TSX-V:CNC) has selected Komatsu (TSE:6301) and Canadian dealer SMS Equipment to supply the load, haul, and support fleet for its Crawford Nickel Project in Ontario, Canada.

More than 300 machines valued at about C$1.5 billion ($1.51 billion) are expected to be purchased over Crawford’s proposed 40-year operating life.

Canada Nickel selected Komatsu after evaluating proposals from four vendors, citing its automation and electrification technologies.

CEO Mark Selby says the equipment could deliver additional value through Komatsu’s DISPATCH fleet-management system and FrontRunner autonomous haulage technology.

“I am very excited about the potential value that could be unlocked by applying Komatsu’s proven technologies,” Selby says.

Canada Nickel expects trolley-assisted haulage to reduce diesel use and carbon dioxide emissions while supporting a future transition to battery-electric vehicles.

Definitive agreements with Komatsu and SMS Equipment are expected by the March 2027 quarter, alongside fleet-support and financing arrangements with Taykwa Tagamou Nation. Canada Nickel says it is targeting a construction decision for Crawford in 2027.

Canada Nickel is developing nickel-sulphide projects in the Timmins-Cochrane mining camp in Ontario, Canada, led by its wholly owned Crawford project.
