Australia-EU trade deal signals growth opportunities

The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies’ (AMEC) CEO Warren Pearce notes that today’s announcement of the Free Trade Agreement between Australia and the European Union (EU) is a “positive outcome” for Australian companies looking to access the European markets.

The agreement is a step forward ensuring that Australian companies can compete fairly in the EU markets, and is focused on the removal of tariffs on critical minerals products to the region.

Pearce stresses the importance of this agreement, “particularly at a time of geopolitical uncertainty”.

The agreement also reinforces Australia’s strategic position as a long-term supplier of critical minerals and the nation’s leadership in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

“Europe is rapidly expanding its electric vehicle and clean energy manufacturing capabilities, and that requires secure and stable supply of critical minerals,” Pearce says.

“Australia is well placed to meet that demand. Our strong ESG standards give international partners confidence that our minerals are produced responsibly.”

The EU is the second largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer globally, after China, producing 2.4 million EVs in 2024.

AMEC notes that this agreement helps position Australia on that supply chain, with the removal of tariffs creating new opportunities to scale operations and attract more investment.

“Improved access to European markets sends a strong signal to investors that Australia is open for business and ready to play a leading role in global supply chains.

“This deal is an important step in strengthening Australia’s trade relationships and supporting the long-term growth of our critical minerals sector.”

AMEC is an industry leading association for Australia’s mineral exploration and mining industry, working as an advocate for explorers, miners, and associated businesses in and for the industry.
