ASX stays the course

The S&P/ASX 200 closed up 27.5 points, or 0.33%, at 8,268.2 points on Thursday (27 February).

The index has lost 1.79% over the last five days, and is 4.03% below its 52-week high.

Eight of the 11 sectors ended in positive territory, with consumer staples leading the charge on a 1.55% advance largely thanks to a strong earnings report by supermarket giant Coles (ASX:COL).

Industrials rose 0.92%, materials added 0.98% and energy was up 0.67% by the closing bell.

Lithium miner Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR) climbed 5.47%, while coal miner Stanmore Resources (ASX:SMR) remained in the red with a 5.51% retreat to $2.40.

The S&P/ASX200 is Australia’s leading share market index and contains the top 200 ASX-listed companies in terms of market capitalisation, and accounts for about 80% of the country’s equity market. The index is designed to measure the performance of the 200 largest index-eligible stocks listed on the ASX by float-adjusted market capitalisation.

It is recognised as the institutional investable benchmark in the country.
